The Department of Women and Child Development was set up to promote the overall welfare of women and children while ensuring the protection and advancement of their constitutional rights. Its primary role is to organize and effectively implement various schemes and programs designed for their benefit. One of its key initiatives is the Integrated Child Development Services (ICDS), which serves as the department’s flagship program. Launched on 2nd October 1975, it has grown into one of the largest programs of its kind globally in terms of reach and implementation. Through ICDS, essential services are delivered to improve the health and nutritional well-being of pregnant women, nursing mothers, and children below six years of age.
