The National Company Law Tribunal (NCLT) is a quasi-judicial body in India established under Section 408 of the Companies Act, 2013. Constituted on June 1, 2016, based on the recommendations of the V. Balakrishna Eradi committee, the NCLT adjudicates issues relating to Indian companies. It serves as the adjudicating authority for matters pertaining to company law, including proceedings related to arbitration, compromise, arrangements, reconstructions, and winding up of companies. Additionally, under the Insolvency and Bankruptcy Code, 2016, the NCLT oversees the insolvency resolution process for companies and limited liability partnerships. The tribunal has multiple benches across India, with the Principal Bench located in New Delhi. Decisions of the NCLT can be appealed to the National Company Law Appellate Tribunal (NCLAT), and subsequently to the Supreme Court of India on points of law.
