The Jawaharlal Institute of Postgraduate Medical Education and Research (JIPMER) is a premier public medical institution located in Puducherry, India. Established in 1823 as the École de Médecine de Pondichéry by the French government, it was later taken over by the Government of India and renamed in honor of India's first Prime Minister, Jawaharlal Nehru. In 2008, JIPMER was designated as an Institute of National Importance (INI) under the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare. The institute offers a wide range of undergraduate, postgraduate, and super-specialty medical courses, including MBBS, MD, MS, DM, and MCh programs. Admissions are based on national-level entrance examinations such as NEET-UG, INI-CET, and INI-SS. JIPMER is also renowned for its research contributions in modern medicine, public health, and medical education, with collaborations with international institutions like the Harvard School of Public Health. The campus spans 195 acres and includes multiple hospital blocks, a nursing college, and research facilities. In the National Institutional Ranking Framework (NIRF) 2024, JIPMER was ranked 5th among medical institutions in India.
