The Indian Coast Guard (ICG) is a maritime law enforcement and search and rescue agency operating under the Ministry of Defence, Government of India. Established on August 18, 1978, it is responsible for protecting India’s maritime interests and enforcing maritime law in the territorial waters and Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ). Its primary roles include coastal security, search and rescue operations, anti-smuggling, environmental protection, and maritime surveillance. The ICG operates independently but works in coordination with the Indian Navy, police, and customs authorities. It plays a vital role in ensuring national security and maritime safety.
